appreciated valerian, Hildegard de Bingen advised it to
fight against gout and stitch.
Its soothing properties were only found about 1800 : Christoph
W. Hufeland recognised that valerian root soothes and
fortifies nerves.
It contains substances such as : acids, volatile oils,
alkaloids (chatinine and valerine), tannins, acetic and
formic acids, epoxytriester of valerian, that calm and
undo cramps.
Valerian roots soothe all nervous states and helps sleeping,
without sleepiness.
Description : perennial plant with divided leaves and
with pale pink flowers.
Habitat and culture : Comes from north Europe and Asia,
it is harvested in central and eastern Europe.
Parts used : root, rhizome.
Traditionally used to fight against : sleep troubles,
anxiety, nervous tiredness, overwork, irritability, tension,
menstrual pains, cramps, stress…
